WORLD AIDS DAY WHY CELEBRATED ON DECEMBER 1ST WHY IS THE RED RIBBON FOR AIDS

                                                                    WORLD AIDS DAY

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1st every year. It's a day to raise awareness about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It's also a day to support people living with HIV and AIDS, and to remember those who have died from the disease.

The first World AIDS Day was observed on December 1, 1988. The World Health Organization established the day to facilitate the exchange of information between national and local governments, international organizations, and individuals.

In 2022, 39 million people were living with HIV. The global prevalence of HIV among adults (the percentage of people ages 15-49 who are infected) has leveled off since 2001. In 2022, it was 0.7%.\

WHY IS AIDS DAY CELEBRATED ON DECEMBER 1ST

Bunn, a former San Francisco television journalist, suggested December 1st as the date for World AIDS Day. He believed that this date would maximize coverage of the day by western news media. He thought it would be long enough after the US elections but before the Christmas holidays.

The red ribbon is the most recognizable symbol of AIDS awareness. It's worn by people all year to show solidarity with people living with HIV and AIDS, and to challenge the stigma and prejudice surrounding AIDS. The red ribbon also symbolizes care and concern

WHY IS THE RED RIBBON FOR AIDS

The red ribbon was chosen to symbolize HIV/AIDS because it's a bold color that's associated with love, passion, and the heart. The color red also connects to blood. The ribbon format was chosen because it's easy to wear and recreate. The red ribbon was designed in 1991 by the Visual AIDS Artists' Caucus in New York. The artists were inspired by the yellow ribbons that honored American soldiers in the Gulf War. They chose red to avoid colors associated with the gay community, like pink and rainbow stripes, to show that HIV affects everyone. The red ribbon is also a symbol of hope for a cure or vaccine, and for improved quality of life for people living with HIV.

The theme for World AIDS Day 2023 is "Let communities lead". The theme recognizes the impact communities have had on the HIV response and global health.
